HARVEY ROY GREENBERG, MD

LITERARY AND MEDICAL BACKGROUND

Harvey Roy Greenberg, M.D., a graduate of Columbia College, and Cornell University Medical College, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University, New York, where he teaches adolescent psychiatry and medical humanities. He practises adult and adolescent psychiatry, psychoanalysis and psychopharmocology in Manhattan.

Dr. Greenberg writes frequently on the psychoanalytic study of cinema, media, and popular culture. His reviews and essays on film and popular culture have appeared in The New York Times Sunday Arts and Leisure Section, Tikkun, Movieline, Film Quarterly, The Psychoanalytic Review, Camera Obscura, The Journal of Popular Film and Television, Cineaste, Film and Philosophy, Projections, and Forward (inter alia).

In l975, he authored The Movies On Your Mind: Film Classics On The Couch From Fellini to Frankenstein; Another collection of essays, Screen Memories: Hollywood Cinema On The Psychoanalytic Couch was published by Columbia University Press in l993.

Dr. Greenberg is film critic of the Psychiatric Times, of PROJECTIONS: Journal of the Forum for the Psychoanalytic Study of Film, and of the New York State Psychiatric Association Web Site. He serves on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Review and the Journal of Popular Film and Television. For the latter, he has guest-edited special issues on "Psychoanalysis and Cinema", "Desiring Images: Sex and Sexuality", and "The Shows Of Violence: Cinematic/Televisual Representations of Violence and Aggression."   Dr. Greenberg has also published widely on general and  adolescent psychiatry. He's authored a series of books on mental health topics for adolescents, including What You Should Know About Drugs and Drug Abuse (Scholastic Press, l97O); Hanging In: What You Should Know About Psychotherapy (Scholastic Press, l982); Emotional Illness In The Family: Helping Your Relative, Helping Yourself (MacMillan Books, l992).

Dr. Greenberg's television guest appearances include Today, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, CBS Sunday, Larry King -Live, Donahue, CNN PrimeTime, Dr Katz, Professional Therapist, a BBC-TV documentary on Patrick O'Brian, and a Showtime Cable Network special on "Scream Queens". He has also appeared on national and international radio programs, including those of PBS, BBC, and CBC.
